Vital maternity safety supplies reach Lviv

Published on 20 February 2023

Baby Lifeline’s most recent shipment of maternity safety equipment to Ukraine has safely arrived in Lviv, from where it will be transported to hospitals in some of the most dangerous areas of the country.

A truck containing vital supplies worth £86,000 left London on Thursday last week (16 February 2023) and has now completed its journey to western Ukraine.

Next, the boxes of equipment are due to be delivered to health professionals working in Vinnytsa in west-central Ukraine, and to those caring for mothers and babies in Zaporizhzhia, a city in the south-east of the country, which has recently been the target of Russian missile strikes.

Baby Lifeline has donated more than £650,000 of maternity safety equipment through its Ukraine Appeal since March 2022. As the war enters its second year, the charity remains committed to doing all it can to ensure lifesaving supplies reach towns and cities on the frontline.

The truckload of supplies that today reached Lviv was made possible by Baby Lifeline’s supporters, who have joined Founder and Chief Executive, Judy Ledger, in calling on UK hospitals, hospices, and clinics to donate equipment they no longer need, or do not intend to use, to the charity’s appeal.

Judy said: “Over the last 11 months, we’ve been able to establish a network of local volunteers, who’ve helped us to deliver our specialist birth bags, and a wide range of other supplies, including defibrillators, fetal monitors, body scanners, PPE, incubators, baby warmers, stretchers, beds, and wheelchairs, to frontline areas of Ukraine.

“As the war continues, health professionals and military personal are providing care in increasingly difficult circumstances. At Baby Lifeline, we’re urging organisations in the UK to remember that babies are still being born in Ukraine, and the equipment they no longer require could be being used by those who are working to deliver babies in dark and freezing cold homes, bunkers, and makeshift shelters.”

Please support Baby Lifeline’s Ukraine Appeal by emailing and telling us about any maternity safety equipment you may be able to donate, at info@babylifeline.org.uk or via this webpage.
