Baby Lifeline is a unique national charity supporting safer and better care for pregnant women and people, and newborn babies all over the UK, and further afield.

Recognised as one of the UK’s leading mother and newborn baby charities, it has attracted the support of leading figures from the health service who sit on the charity’s advisory panel and A-list celebrities who fulfil the roles of Patrons who strive to draw attention to this hugely important charity.

Our Story

Driven by the personal loss of three premature babies, Judy Ledger formed Baby Lifeline in 1981. As a registered nurse and a bereaved mother, Judy brought both an understanding of the tragedy of losing a baby and also of the exceptional skills and dedication shown by medical professionals often in adverse and under-resourced conditions.

From setting out to raise funds for just one incubator for Coventry’s Neonatal Unit after losing her third baby – Stuart  Judy has led Baby Lifeline to what it is today. The charity has raised millions of pounds, equipping and supporting specialist training in maternity units across the UK, as well as providing training internationally. These training services are delivered by a not-for-profit social enterprise company – Baby Lifeline Training Ltd (registered company no: 6487982).

It is a sad fact that even with the advances in medical care and science today that every day, on average, 13 babies are stillborn or die within their first four weeks of life in the UK. On average more than 1 mother every week will also die in the UK.

There is still a lot more work to be done.

What We Achieve

Over the last four decades, Baby Lifeline has raised millions of pounds for critical equipment for hospitals caring for mothers and babies, led always by the needs of those communities and services.

As well as ongoing support for equipment, Baby Lifeline has developed expert-led training which is relevant to preventing injuries and death in maternity, and making care better. We train thousands of professionals each year who work on the frontline of the NHS – changing how women and babies are cared for on a daily basis.

We also influence national policy and guidelines through our own research, and through extensive collaboration with other charities, organisations, and those impacted by care. We are always striving to do more.
