Every year on 5th May we celebrate midwives working globally to bring babies safely into the world. This year’s International Day of the Midwife theme, Critical in every crisis, is a reminder that midwives are vital in supporting and caring for women, birthing people and families during some of the most vulnerable and powerful moments of life. Across the NHS, global health systems, and across our communities, midwives are essential to safe births, better outcomes, and healthier futures.
Thank you, midwives!
How Baby Lifeline Supports Midwives
At Baby Lifeline, our mission is to make care safer and better for every pregnant woman, birthing person, and newborn baby. Midwives play a critical role in this mission: investing in midwives means investing in safety.
We provide equipment that ensures that maternity staff are equipped to provide the safest level of care. Our Community Midwife Bags are in use in 131 organisations across all regions of the UK, and are also used internationally.
Through Baby Lifeline Training we provide evidence-based, high-quality CPD courses designed to equip maternity staff with the latest skills, knowledge, and support. From emergency obstetric training to trauma-informed care, we’re proud to deliver education that makes a real difference to healthcare teams and the families they care for.
We also work closely with midwives when gathering insight to shape national policy and research. The voices of frontline staff are essential in understanding what is working and what needs to change.
And we’re not just colleagues — we’re friends. Many of the midwives we work with become long-term partners in our mission by sharing their expertise and passion for the profession.
A Message of Thanks
Today, we say thank you to midwives working locally and internationally. To every midwife — we see you and we are grateful.
To the midwives who continue to train, to lead, to teach others; to those working under pressure in stretched systems and still showing compassion every day — thank you.
And to the midwives who work with us here at Baby Lifeline and Baby Lifeline Training — we see your dedication every single day, and we are proud to stand beside you.
This International Day of the Midwife, let’s raise our voices to honour and support midwives, and make sure they have what they need to continue doing their life-changing work.
