British figurative artist Rupert Shrive has this month donated the proceeds from one of his Paris exhibitions to Baby Lifeline’s Ukraine Appeal.
The donation covers the cost of some of the urgently needed equipment driven to Ukraine by human rights lawyer Andrea Fraser and is now being used by midwives and doctors working in one of the country’s most dangerous areas.
Rupert’s exhibition was held at fashion designer Paul Smith’s Boulevard Raspail store in the French capital between April and June this year. It displayed a series of small works painted from direct observation during the Covid-19 lockdown, and included still life compositions, portraits from his Paris studio, and urban landscapes.
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Rupert has painted several works depicting the horror experienced by those on the ground. His piece, ‘Theatre of the absurd’, for example, was based on the bombing of Mariupol theatre on 16 March 2022.
Explaining why he decided to donate money to Baby Lifeline’s Ukraine Appeal, Rupert said:
“I wanted to be sure it was being put to maximum use and not getting caught up in administration. Baby Lifeline is a small but very efficient organisation, providing essential care in terrible conditions – strongly recommended by friends working on the ground. “

“At Baby Lifeline, our thoughts are always with those giving birth during Russian attacks, and the midwives and doctors who are dealing with the complications of childbirth in horrific surroundings. Having supporters like Rupert, who was able to fund equipment that will go on to save many lives, means the world to us.”
