Nicky Lyon
Co-Founder, Campaign for Safer Births
Nicky Lyon co-founded the Campaign for Safer Births with Michelle Hemmington in 2013. The campaign is focused on improving maternity safety and for robust, independent investigations with parent involvement.
Nicky’s life was changed when her son Harry suffered profound brain damage during their term labour. Harry spent many weeks and months in hospital. He was fed by tube and suffered constant sickness, fits and discomfort. Harry deteriorated and died of a chest infection aged 18 months. Harry was their much wanted first baby. Since then Nicky has devoted her time to investigate maternity safety and working for improvements.
Now an ‘expert by experience’ Nicky has been involved as a user representative on many national programmes including the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists Each Baby Counts programme, NHS England’s MatNeo Safety Improvement Programme and the Avoiding Brain Injury (ABC) Programme of work. Nicky currently sits on the NHS England Maternity & Neonatal Programme Quality, Performance and Surveillance Committee & Recommendations Group. Nicky is also a user representative with her Local Maternity and Neonatal System and Clinical Network in Cheshire & Mersey, where she is based. Nicky brings a passion for quality and improving outcomes to all of her work.
Nicky has a degree in Genetics and previously worked in senior management roles focused on management information, resource scheduling and planning.
