Autism Specialist Midwife and an Antenatal Midwife, East and North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust
Allison Wickramasinghe is the Autism Specialist Midwife and an Antenatal Midwife on Dacre Ward at East and North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust.
With over 28 years of midwifery experience, Allison has undertaken a wide range of clinical and leadership roles, predominantly as an Integrated Community Team Leader. Throughout her career, she has developed extensive expertise across the maternity pathway, supporting both low-risk and high-risk pregnancies and births, including home water births and complex care within consultant-led maternity services.
Allison has also held the role of Teenage Pregnancy Specialist Midwife, working within a Health Action Zone-funded project that provided continuity of care for vulnerable young women throughout pregnancy. This role involved close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including social care, substance misuse services, haemoglobinopathy and sickle cell services, sexual health services, and safeguarding teams. Her work focused on improving maternal and sexual health outcomes, promoting engagement with services, and supporting young women to make informed choices for their futures.
Alongside her NHS career, Allison has worked within independent birth services, teaching hypnobirthing and providing holistic maternity support, including Body Balancing, placenta encapsulation services, and Closing the Bones ceremonies.
As a neurodivergent practitioner, with lived experience of autism and ADHD, Allison brings a unique perspective to her role as Autism Specialist Midwife. Combining professional expertise with personal insight, she is passionate about improving maternity experiences and outcomes for autistic people. Through education, advocacy and tailored support, Allison is helping to shape more inclusive maternity services and improve understanding of neurodiversity within healthcare settings.
