Ms Bernadette McGhie
Bernadette is a consultant solicitor at Russell Cooke and head of their brain injury group. She specialises in brain injury claims, including birth-related neurological damage and maternal injury claims, and claims relating to the epilepsy drug sodium valproate, which causes birth defects.
Prior to training as a solicitor, Bernadette qualified as a general and paediatric nurse and enjoyed a very successful clinical career for many years. This background knowledge lends her an advantage when acting for claimants in medical litigation, and forms the basis of her special interest in paediatric and birth injury cases. Bernadette acts for mothers and babies who have been damaged during pregnancy and child-birth. This includes acting for babies who have suffered serious brain injury and mothers who have suffered damage during the course of their baby’s birth. She is extremely committed to improving the safety of care to mothers and babies in childbirth and the neonatal period.
Bernadette is a governor of Mary Hare school for the deaf and was previously a Trustee of the Meningitis Trust (now Meningitis Now) for many years and, building on this and her nursing experience, also maintains a firm interest in meningitis. She is also an AvMA Clinical Negligence Panel member.
