Fetal WellbeingFetal Wellbeing

Ultrasound and Fetal Heart Assessment provide us with important clues to fetal health, however education and understanding amongst clinicians have sometimes lagged behind technology and so skill gaps have developed.

This video will help midwives and obstetricians to improve their skill in assessing fetal wellbeing which will reduce the likelihood of poor outcomes and litigation and ensure that they are able to provide the high quality care that the public expects.

Fetal Wellbeing’s production team includes; Mr. Donald Gibb MD, MRCP, FRCOG; Mr. Richard Johanson MA, BSc, MD, MRCOG

The road to success using the ventouseThe Road to Success using the Ventouse

This interactive video is a useful, if not essential, aid for obstetricians starting out in obstetric practice or midwives undertaking advanced midwifery practice modules.  It will help clinicians to evaluate when and how to intervene, the importance of choosing the correct cup as well as identifying reasons for failure.

“The Road to Success using the Ventouse” is an update of Mr. Richard Johanson’s original video, which is now produced in 9 languages.

External cephalic version at termExternal Cephalic Version at Term

Not only does external cephalic version (ECV) significantly reduce the number of breech presentations at term, its use also reduces the high rate of caesarean delivery for this indication.  Any reduction in the primary rate of caesarean delivery has an additive effect on the overall rate by decreasing the number of women undergoing repeat caesarean delivery.  The major benefits of ECV are reduced maternal morbidity and mortality from surgery.

This interactive video will help the viewer to know when to offer ECV and how to perform the procedure.  Examples are shown from South Africa and England suggesting different methods of optimising success rates.

“External Cephalic Version at Term” has been produced by Mr. Robin Burr MD, MRCOG and Mr. Richard Johanson MA, BSc, MD, MRCOG.

The road to success using the ventousePromoting Effective Care in Pregnancy and Childbirth.

In order to promote best practice in maternity care, dissemination and implementation of current best evidence is essential. Ensuring that both practitioners have access to reliable, up-to-date and relevant information is vital if evidence-based approaches are to be instituted and harmful practices avoided.  However, in resource challenged settings, this is difficult – yet not impossible.

This interactive video is an invaluable tool to help clinicians use the Cochrane Library, the definitive resource for evidence-based health care.  As well as providing an understanding of the visual display and an introduction to interpreting the statistics, it includes information on relevant subjects such as steroids for prematurity and Doppler ultrasound for high risk pregnancy.

“Promoting Effective Care in Pregnancy & Childbirth” has been produced by Mr. Richard Johanson MA, BSc, MD, MRCOG and Dr. Charlotte Howell MA, FRCA, DRCOG (Cochrance Reviewer)

Clinical Appliations of CTG MonitoringClinical Applications of CTG Monitoring

Electronic fetal monitoring is a controversial practice in modern obstetric care and is frequently an aspect of medicolegal cases involving the management of labour and delivery. The interpretation of the cardiotocograph (CTG) is a skill required by those caring for the pregnant woman.  Studies have shown that most ‘experts’ do not interpret CTGs in a consistent manner, when compared with either other experts or themselves. However, it has also been shown that consistency can be improved with training.

This video, which has been endorsed by both the RCOG and the RCM, will help clinicians provide the high quality of care that the public expects.

“Clinical Applications of CTG Monitoring” production team includes Mr. Donald Gibb MD, MRCP, FRCOG and Prof Sabaratnam Arulkumaran DCH, FRCS(Ed), MRCOG.

The Crimson FileThe Crimson File - Lessons from CTG disasters.

CESDI has identified CTG misinterpretation as one of the major contributors to avoidable perinatal deaths. Using the sad reality of past mistakes, the messages of CTG interpretation and appropriate action taught in videos 1 & 5 will be reinforced.  This video will use examples of “near misses” and poor outcome to alert clinicians to worrying patterns – both familiar and unfamiliar.  The video will also cover ways in which standards of care can be monitored and approaches to increasing knowledge and awareness on the labour ward.

“The Crimson Files – Learning from CTG Disasters” has been produced by Mr. Richard Johanson MA, BSc, MD, MRCOG and Dr. Peter Young (SpR)

Coping with labour ward crisisCoping with Labour Ward Crises

There are cases of avoidable death arising in acute emergencies on the labour ward as the CEMACH report demonstrates.  This video will show clinicians how to manage examples of labour ward crises and will also illustrate how scenario rehearsals can be undertaken “in house”.  Using models and obstetric mannequins, all staff on the labour ward can be familiarised with complications such as shoulder dystocia, prolapsed cord, trapped breech and ruptured uterus, which are all covered in this comprehensive training video.

“Coping with Labour Ward Crises” production team is led by Richard Johanson MA, BSc, MD, MRCOG.

Avoiding Deaths from Growth RestrictionAvoiding Deaths from Growth Restriction.

Fetal growth restriction is the second leading cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality, following prematurity.  Identification of growth restriction is crucial because proper evaluation and management can result in a favourable outcome.
This video will show the viewer how to predict growth restriction in high-risk women and detect growth restriction in low risk women and the important distinction between “normal” and “abnormal” growth restriction will be addressed.

“Avoiding Deaths from Growth Restriction” has been produced by Miss K. Hema MB, BS, MRCOG and Mr. Richard Johanson MA, BSc, MD, MRCOG with input from Prof M. Whittle, Mr. P. Soothill, Mr. J. Gardosi and Mr. M. Kilby.

Teaching resuscitation skills for delivery attendantsTeaching Resuscitation Skills for Delivery Attendants.

CESDI reports state that a number of babies that died had not received adequate resuscitation following delivery.  All professionals directly responsible for the care of newborn infants should be able to carry out basic resuscitation as resuscitation may be required in situations distant from expert assistance. This video is designed to equip the practitioner with the necessary knowledge and skills to competently carry out resuscitation of the newborn.
