Medical Projects
Baby Lifeline is the only UK National Mother & Baby Charity. It supports vital care for unborn babies, newborn babies and their mothers through the provision of medical equipment, training and research programmes for doctors, midwives and other associated health professionals. Despite the advanced medical care available in contemporary health services, many babies still die at or around the time of birth each year in the UK. With increasing financial pressures being placed on the NHS, Baby Lifeline works to compliment and provide additional funding to ensure the best possible outcome for pregnancy and birth.

Paediatric DVD
Baby Lifeline is working in conjunction with Child Advocacy International alongside the Advanced Paediatric Life Support Group (APLS) to produce a Multimedia DVD on the management of paediatric emergencies. This DVD produced in collaboration with Keele University will be for worldwide distribution, particularly to the third world.
A paediatric CD Rom has already been distributed nationally and internationally by Child Advocacy International and been presented at many conferences. Suggestions have been made for an APLS DVD version in order to utilise the technical advantages of DVD media.
During 2003, Baby Lifeline has helped to educate over 1000 professionals by initiating and providing conferences and seminars on pertinent topics. Our reputation in this field is outstanding. We’ve secured the support of many leading and eminent speakers, and as a result, attracted large numbers of delegates from across the UK and Europe, including midwives, midwifery managers, risk managers, obstetricians and clinical negligence lawyers. We have also gained accreditation from the Royal College of Midwives.

In conjunction with Child Advocacy International, Baby Lifeline has also raised funds to support the production of an Obstetric CD-Rom, covering the management of obstetric emergencies. This CD-Rom too will be distributed both nationally and internationally.
The CD-Rom will include selected material from Baby Lifeline’s B.I.R.T.H Series videos and a significant amount of video footage and photographs collected by Child Advocacy International from various hospitals around the world.
The aim is to produce an obstetric CD-Rom to serve as a multimedia guide to obstetrics. The CD will contain text, pictures, video clips and other interactive material to create a better understanding of the issues related to care and best practice in the management of obstetric emergencies
Baby Lifeline has developed a major publishing project in conjunction with a national publisher. The aim was to summarise the key findings and recommendations from government reports and confidential enquiries, creating a reference guide for midwives and associated health professionals.
This book is entitled "Adverse Outcomes in Maternity Care" and was very successfully launched at the Royal College of Midwives Annual Conference in May 2004.
The project was developed and edited by Dr Grace Edwards a Consultant midwife with extensive experience in various aspects of midwifery services and is Accredited by the Royal College of Midwives.
Domestic Violence Seminar
On June 6th 2003, Baby Lifeline sponsored a Domestic Violence seminar organised by the Coventry Domestic Violence Partnership. This conference explored domestic violence from a child’s perspective and considered the prevalence of domestic violence during pregnancy. The day included a dramatic reconstruction by Geese Theatre productions, case study scenarios and research findings to help guide and inform the many professionals who deal with victims of domestic violence. The day was an immense success.
Baby Lifeline is currently liaising with the Coventry PCT (Primary Care Trust) to raise funding for a project to increase awareness of the problems associated with domestic violence in pregnancy. The project would involve compiling an information card containing help and advice for women suffering from domestic violence. The card would be available nationally within such places as public toilets and would also be distributed where appropriate by midwives, GPs and other health professionals.

In response to annual CESDI (Confidential Enquiry into Stillbirths and Deaths in Infancy) reports, Baby Lifeline produced a B.I.R.T.H series of training videos. The CESDI reports have highlighted ‘human error’ as a contributing factor in the number of mortalities in the UK and consequently recommended more training for health professionals. The conclusions led Baby Lifeline to focus on producing an informative educational video series in conjunction with leading experts in the fields of maternity and obstetrics. The B.I.R.T.H series includes nine videos, all endorsed by the Royal College of Midwives and the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists. Baby Lifeline was the only charity to produce such a practical response to the recommendations of CESDI. The videos are sold worldwide to hospitals and universities for training purposes and are particularly popular, internationally for training. More Details
The Maternity Care Working Party
Baby Lifeline is a member of the Maternity Care Working Party (MCWP), which was set up in 1999. The MCWP is an independent, multi-disciplinary working body that campaigns for improvements in maternity care. It was initially formed to raise awareness of the public health implications of the rising caesarean section rate. It continues to highlight the health and social needs of women and their families, and the contribution that women-centred maternity services can make to the promotion of public health.
The MCWP acts as an expert advisory body to the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Maternity (APPG). As a member of MCWP Baby Lifeline also attends the APPG open meetings, which are chaired by Julia Drown MP. These meetings address such issues as premature and sick babies and the availability of choice in maternity services.
