HURT BY BIRTH - PERINEAL TRAUMA AND REPAIR

In the UK it is estimated that over 85% of women who have a vaginal birth will sustain some degree of perineal trauma and of these 60-70% will experience suturing.  Perineal damage can have a major adverse impact on a woman’s health leading to major physical, psychological and social problems.  Mismanagement of perineal trauma is also a prominent cause for obstetric litigation.

The aim of this conference is to provide up-to-date information for medical and midwifery staff on the intrapartum interventions which may influence the rate and severity of perineal trauma, the assessment and classification of perineal trauma and the most effective methods and materials for use in the repair of perineal trauma.   Delegates will hear from keynote speakers as well as participating in interactive workstations on the principles of repair and suturing methods.

30 MINUTES TO DELIVER

Another chance to attend this extremely popular conference.

Every year in the UK there are around 120,000 caesarean sections of which 16% are "urgent" – i.e. there is an immediate threat to the life of a woman or fetus. In these cases the decision-to-delivery interval is critically important. It is a time of immense stress for the woman and her partner, and of anxiety for the professionals. Speed is necessary for the baby, but safety is essential for the mother. Questions are now being raised about consent obtained in such circumstances. Subsequent allegations of "brain damage" may lead to multi-million pound claims but the opinions of medicolegal experts, hitherto decisive, are now being challenged by evidence on what really happens during the decision-to-delivery interval.

MENTAL HEALTH & CHILDBIRTH - ARE WE MAKING A DIFFERENCE?

The UK Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Deaths (CEMD) reports that psychiatric disorders contributed to 12% of all maternal deaths (10% of which were due to suicide). Mental disorders may go untreated, although response to treatment in the case of antenatal and postnatal depression tends to be good. If untreated, women may remain depressed, sometimes for many years, with consequent negative impact not only for the mother but also for the baby and other family members.

This conference, delivered by a multi-professional expert faculty, will discuss topics such as: the NICE Antenatal & Postnatal Mental Health guideline; the lessons from the Confidential Enquiries; common mental health disorders;  the organisation of contemporary mental health service for childbearing women; and the maternity services ability to ‘make a difference’.  It is aimed at all clinicians both in the primary and secondary health care setting.
